Chinese Witch Brews

UI/UX Design
2020

In every Chinese household, there has to always at least have this one, probably oddly suspicious-looking, medication or relief that your mother seems to brand as some sort of magical all-cure — but really, what exactly are they and are they legitimately what your mother claims to say it's for? Chinese Witch Brews is a web guide of commercialized traditional Chinese medicine and remedies for the modern generation aiming to extend its relevance, especially for second-generation (and beyond) Chinese immigrants through deeper understanding of what they are.

The visual design, whilst intended to appeal to the younger audience, draws reference to the concerned topic itself through a widely center-aligned layout with symmetrical elements used in commercialized Chinese medicine packaging, often with origins dating back into the decades or even centuries and have not widely changed.

Despite its primary practical function as a medicine identifier, the overall motive lies within how the identifier is designed, inspired by the trending video game, Animal Crossing. Instead of simply being, taking a photo of the medicine and allowing the AI algorithm to do its thing, the selection of its individual characteristics gives the user an experience of actually making the 'brew' itself in a way similar to character customization in video games, having the user fully embrace how weird some of these Chinese medicines are and amplify their interest and initial curiosity. In this sense, the identifier can transcend from simply merely being an identifying tool, but a feature that users can use to make their own brew despite not having a medication to identify, to see if their brew actually exists in real life.
